Choosing age appropriate books for children can be a little tricky. So how do you pick a book? What are the criteria for choosing childrens books? Where can you buy childrens books that will delight your child? Have you been trying to find childrens books that are just right—for your child or grandchild? It sounds pretty easy until you start looking at childrens books. And then it can become overwhelming because there are so many factors to consider.

Choosing Childrens Books Many childrens books have an age range designated for the book. So why wouldn't you just buy a book based on the publisher's recommendation?The short answer to that question is that every child is an individual. No two children are alike, and each has his own interests, strengths and weaknesses. So, what is important for finding age appropriate books that will engage your child? - What are your child's interests? - While it is nice to expand your child's interests through reading, you need to engage your child by providing reading materials on subjects that your child already enjoys.
- What is his level of reading? - This is not his age. His level of reading refers to his reading proficiency. Some children read well compared to others their age. Others struggle just to keep up. A book needs to provide a bit of challenge—but not be so difficult that your child is doomed to fail. Failing is NOT fun!
- What do kids his age, do and read? - You may have a child who reads well and is reading a couple of grades ahead of his peers. However, if he reads books, for example, about the teen years, he might be getting in over his head—socially. Some subjects are best addressed when a child is at the appropriate age.
As you can see, choosing age appropriate books is a very personal thing. When a book is chosen carefully for a child, it will be a treasure that he will love. And he will read it over and over, for years. Maybe even to HIS children. So, take a little time and make a careful selection for your child's next book. By doing so, you will be showing your child that each book is special—and that she is special, too!
