Books Preschool Children Like

Books preschool children like are a bit more advanced than books for babies. A preschooler may like interactive books or picture books for preschoolers. Do you know how to choose a good preschool book?

As children grow quickly past the baby stage, they start to learn by leaps and bounds. And, as they conquer information about their immediate world, they become interested in stories with more fantasy and make-believe characters.

Young children still have trouble distinguishing between reality and fantasy—so you need to help them with this. This is the age of “funny” and pretend!

Choosing Preschooler Books

Around five, children may start recognizing letters, numbers, and words. They can usually recognize their name and often can write it, too. The most important letter in the alphabet is the first letter of your child's name. She will recognize this everywhere!

Preschoolers will pretend to write and read, and it's important to start teaching them reading readiness skills like reading from left to right, holding the book upright, and reading a book from front to back.

In a Book Look for...

  • Slightly complex text
  • Stories about familiar objects like nursery rhymes
  • Good rhythm to the story
  • Effective word repetition
  • Interactive books that pop up or move, have flaps or things to find
  • Word and Alphabet Books
  • Pre-writing skills (like left to right and top to bottom)

Here are a few examples of quality books preschool age:

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?, Books preschool.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?: 40th Anniversary Edition (Brown Bear and Friends) - This is a favorite for many preschoolers. Brown Bear introduces the child to a number of animals. Children love the funny animals, and they enjoy reading this book as one of their first reading books.

The Monster at the end of This Book, Books preschool.

The Monster at the End of this Book - a Golden Book classic. Grover, the muppet on Sesame Street, begs your child on each page—NOT to turn the page, because there is a monster at the end of the book. When you get to the end, the monster is....Grover! Even adults find this book fun!

Dog Heaven, Books preschool.

Dog Heaven - The book starts with, "When dogs go to heaven, they don't need wings because God knows that dogs love running best." Children love to read about dogs playing with angel children and eating special heavenly biscuits. Remarkably, adults love this book too, and the book is often given to another adult who has lost a dog. Timeless—for ALL ages!

Llama Llama Red Pajama, Books preschool.

Llama Llama Red Pajama - This charming book deals with a common issue—being left alone in your room at bedtime. Baby Llama worries when mama leaves the room (facial expressions in this book are great!). Mama reassures him and he learns that she will always be close by. Well done rhyming and the pictures are colorful and very expressive. Sure to be a favorite.

Keep in mind that, when looking for books preschool children will take a liking to, remember that interaction with the story adds lots of interest. Children at this age are starting to recognize feelings and they are much more aware of their immediate world. Fantasy is now more interesting, as well.
