Early Reading Intervention

Young children have a natural tendency to enjoy learning and the pre-reading skills that will lead to reading. For example, do you know how important it is to read to children?

In fact, studies have shown that reading to a newborn baby helps children to develop a love of reading. Reading to children of any age also helps children to increase their vocabularies!

The importance of reading to children is without question. And here's a bonus—children and parents who read together actually strengthen healthy family relationships through reading!

Reading Games

Books are fun, and one way to get your children interested in reading is to play reading games. Reading games for kids come in many forms. Here are some ideas to help you get started...

  • Car Games - Do you remember how boring a long trip in the car can be for a child? Liven things up a bit by playing some games that encourage vocabulary growth, phonics understanding and alphabetic knowledge.
  • For example, you could go through the alphabet, naming objects (as you see them) that come next in the alphabet. A=antenna, B=bird, C=car, D=dog, etc.
  • License plates – Name the state for each license plate you see. Someone can keep a written account. See if you can see license plates for all 50 states.

  • Games to teach reading - Whether you are homeschooling or not, you can use fun games to teach reading to your child. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas for reading games, you will find that there are books and online reading games to help you get your children reading.

    Positive Reinforcement
    for Children Reading

There are several ways that you can support your child's efforts at reading. Here are a few:

    • Choosing children's books - When your child is young, you will be choosing books for her. Don't just choose books because of their price. It's far more important to find kids books that are age appropriate, have content that is just the right reading level and subjects that are fun and interesting to your child.

There are many wonderful children's books on the market, and many will be interesting to your children. One example for young children is Snappy Fun Books.

    • Encourage reading literacy achievement - Let your child know that you are proud of his reading accomplishments. Positive reinforcement encourages future growth and makes a child want to continue to please you.

    • Set an example - Set aside time for reading. Read in front of your child. Show your child that you think that books are fun! And don't forget that reading to children is important!

    • How to increase your vocabulary - Did you know that hearing words helps a reader to recognize words in their reading? We first hear and use words before we are able to read or write them. Spend time talking to your child, using some words that he doesn't know yet. Conversation helps!

    • Value reading and literacy, yourself - If you enjoy reading, your excitement will be passed on to your children.

Encouraging reading for your child and setting an example by showing your child that you read and enjoy books will go a long way toward getting your children reading. Take a small amount of time to do these things—and the rewards will last a lifetime!
