If You Like Reading
Your Kids Will Too!

If you like reading, your children will learn to love reading, as well.

Showing that you value reading and literacy sets a good example and sets the stage for your child's reading success.

You need to value reading and literacy before your children will.

When children see that you enjoy reading, they learn that books are fun.

You can do a few simple things to help your children see that reading is important.

  • Show your own interest in reading.
  • Read in front of your children.
  • Be positive about reading.
  • Set aside daily quiet time for family reading.
  • Limit TV time.

Success in Reading
Leads to Success in Life

People who watch the most TV are the least successful in life. Did you know that...
  • Children ages 3-5 spend an average of 13 1/2 hours per week watching television.
  • Children of all ages watch as much TV in one day as they read for fun in an entire week!
  • The vocabulary of the average children's book is greater than prime-time television shows.

When kids are watching TV instead of reading they aren't developing important skills for reading! Turn off the TV a little more often! And show your child that you love reading.

Your enthusiasm for reading will be passed onto the children in your life. Kids who learn from parents and caregivers that reading is fun are more likely to work hard at reading. So, if you like reading, make sure that your child sees you reading and know that you think that reading is fun!

"As parents, the most important thing we can do is read to our children early and often. Reading is the path to success in school and life. When children learn to love books, they learn to love learning."
Laura Bush
