The National Book Award Winners

The National Book Award was established in 1950 to honor excellent works of fiction.

These award winning childrens books are for young adults and teens.

Some of the stories deal with complicated or abstract topics like human cloning, death, and coming of age.If you are looking for a wonderful book to read with an older child these can be very intriguing stories.

You'll want to be cautious, though.

I've previewed some of these stories at my library, and they're the kind you'll want to read with your children and discuss together. And not all parents will agree with the content in some of these award winning books.

As you read together, great opportunity to tackle some tough topics and have some neat discussions will undoubtedly arise. Seize the moment!

Award Winning Childrens Books

2008 - Judy Blundell, What I Saw and How I Lied

2007 - Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

2006 - M.T. Anderson, The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Volume I: The Pox Party

2005 - Jeanne Birdsall, The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy

2004 - Pete Hautman, Godless: How an Evangelical Preacher Became One of America's Leading Atheists

2003 - Polly Horvath, The Canning Season

2002 - Nancy Farmer, The House of the Scorpion

2001 - Virginia Euwer Wolff, True Believer (Make Lemonade, Book 2)

2000 - Gloria Whelan, Homeless Bird

Because many of these books touch on controversial subjects, parents might consider reading the books first, before having their young teens read them. The quality of the writing is good but the topics get into areas that adults have varying views on.

These childrens book awards winners are, however, definitely worth reading, perhaps with adult guidance for the younger readers. The books naturally lend themselves to great discussions!
