Newbery Medal
Award Winning Childrens Books

The Newbery Medal is the oldest children’s book award.

It's been awarded since 1922! Newbery award winning books have been enjoyed for, literally, generations!

So many of the books have become classics...Charlotte's Web, for example is a book that I read as a child—and then my children read.

I'm sure you've also read many of these Newbery award winning books.

When I started to think about it, it occurred to me that I've read a lot more of these books than I realized. As I read through the list of winners, it was like taking a walk through time. These are wonderful award winning childrens books that awakened my love of reading, and working on this list was like finding old friends I'd nearly forgotten.

I remember as a kid loving:

Some of these stories really moved me as I learned about life in another person's shoes. Stories like:

I read many of these books during summer vacation from school and still remember lying on my bed in the afternoon heat with a book propped up on my knees. What a wonderful time!

I also remember being so wrapped up in the storyline of 1963 Medal Winner, A Wrinkle in Time, and 1979 Medal Winner, The Westing Game. In fact, I recently found these books recently at a thrift shop and bought them for my grandchildren to read someday.

So, why am I telling you all this? Just a reminder that sharing books with your children can be such a gift! The lessons learned from books go way beyond just the ability to read.

A really good book makes you think, helps you see things from another's perspective, and helps you become a more understanding person.

There are many wonderful Newbery Medal winners, so enjoy browsing through these great childrens award winning books!
