Importance of Reading Materials

Every home needs reading materials.

Exposing children to books is a very easy way to get children reading.

In fact, homes that have books and encourage reading, produce the best child readers.

Some reading experts even believe that the biggest obstacle to literacy is the scarcity of books in our homes.

The importance of books is without question!

Studies have found that students with higher reading scores also had four types of reading supplies in their homes:

  • Encyclopedias
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • And at least 25 books!

Of course you don't have to buy all those books yourself! Ask aunts, uncles or grandparents to give books and magazine subscriptions to your children as gifts for Christmas or birthdays. It is important for your child to have her own books.

Another way to expand on the number of reading materials that your child reads is to go to the library. Get a library card for your child and go often!

Attend children's readings at the library and expose your child to other people who understand the importance of books, too.

Other important supplies to have around are actually for writing. Since reading and writing go hand in hand, keep paper, pencils, and crayons around.

Encourage your kids to make up their own stories and poems and write or draw pictures about the stories that they read.

Lastly, set up a special place for reading--like a well lit corner with a bookshelf. The reading corner doesn't have to be fancy.

Make the books and magazines accessible to your child. That way, they can use them whenever they like. Your goal is for your children to voluntarily choose a book or writing supplies.

Give children the freedom to use books when they would like to. Most parents will find that letting children read the books whenever they want, is much better than running around trying to protect their books.

If you have adult books (or special books) that you value highly, you can have a rule that your children must ask permission or help to read those books.

Reading success can be encouraged by having reading materials--books, magazines, encyclopedias, and newspapers--in the home.

Start to gather children's books now by attending yard sales, going to flea markets and buying books online. You'll soon have a fine collection of books that will delight your child and get him on the path to successful reading.
