School Age Books
Ages 9-12

School age books that kids will enjoy, can be the most difficult to find.

Reading levels vary widely and so do interests.

But, there are still many high quality books that will provide fun reading for kids.

By the time children reach the 4th grade or they are 9 years old, they have discovered that books are fun.

But, unfortunately many (but not all) of the highest quality literary and illustration books are written for the younger crowd – ages birth to 8.

Childrens Books Ages 9-12

When looking for books for kids, ages 9-12, consider:

  • The child's interests – Is the book about a topic the child will enjoy?

  • The reading level – The book should make the child reach a little – but it should not be so difficult that he won't have fun reading it—or he'll never be able to finish it.

  • Humor – School age kids enjoy reading funny books. So, do consider humor when choosing school age books.

  • Adventure – Children in elementary school are starting to love exploration through the eyes of characters in books. They can visit far-away places and learn about other people.

  • Interactive books – Books that have puzzles or books that solve a mystery are fun reading for kids!

Here are some examples of good quality books for children, ages 9-12.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, school age books

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4) - This has to be one of the most popular books of all time. A magical mystery that kids and parents love alike.

Ella Enchanted, School age books

Ella Enchanted - This is a modern day Cinderella story, complete with a wicked stepmother, a spell on the main character and a happy ending. Young adults into their mid-teens love this book.

Alanna, school age books

Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, Book 1) - Alanna, a 10 year old girl and her twin brother are being sent away—she to a convent to become a “lady” and he to be a knight and great warrior. They switch places, and the adventure begins...

Mossflower, school age books

Mossflower (Redwall, Book 2) - A tale of good and evil. This book is like reading about the legend of King Arthur or Robin Hood. Good and evil are accentuated and the heroes are brave and strong. Boys and girls alike will enjoy this book.

Last of the great Whangdoodles, school age books

The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles - A fantasy book. If your child liked Harry Potter or Ella Enchanted, he will like this one. A professor and 3 children join forces to find Whangdoodleland and the last remaining Whangdoodles (kind, loving creatures—that people no longer believe in). An adventure story.

Warriors #1, school age books

Warriors #1: Into the Wild - Loved by both boys and girls alike. A story of clan rivalry—between 4 clans of wild cats. A house cat (pet) joins the group and earns the respect of the wild ones.

Star Wars pop-up, school age books

Star Wars: A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy - I almost overlooked this one. It sounds like a book for preschoolers. But, it's masterfully done and loved by all ages—including star war buffs in their older years. There are pop-ups and incredible details. Click on the name above, and you can view a short video about the book.

When choosing school age books, keep the interests of the child in mind. Choose books that he will like—not books that have your agenda.

Children this age, who are becoming more independent, will see right through a parent who buys a book simply to “brainwash” a child into her way of thinking. Let's make sure that reading is fun for our kids!
