Why is Reading Important?

Why is reading important?

Critical reading skills help us read to learn.

We use them everyday for everything from cooking to learning how to lay ceramic tile.

And we learn them early...

The importance of reading extends far beyond scholastic achievement at school.

In addition to helping us do well in other school subjects, reading comprehension skills also help us get information on the internet, in newspapers and magazines and in books that teach us how to do everyday practical tasks.

Why is Reading Important?
We Read to Learn

My dad used to say, "I'm not a reader." He would tell me that he didn't really like to read. But he always had two or three books that had sticky notes in them, underlined paragraphs, and notes scribbled in the margins.

You see, he didn't read novels. He read non-fiction. He still does.

My dad is one of the most intelligent, self-educated men I know. He loves to learn from books and, lately, the internet. My dad has developed the ability to take the information from a book and then apply it to real life situations--better than most of us.

So why doesn't he consider himself a reader? Because he doesn't like to curl up on the couch with a novel. He'd rather sit at a desk with a red pencil and read a book about a topic he's interested in at that moment.

He uses his reading comprehension skills to obtain practical knowledge. Knowldege that he uses to DO things that he likes to do!

The Real Importance of Reading

You see, the real importance of reading is not just so that we can do well at school. It's not so that we can devour a novel that we enjoy, although that is a nice benefit that goes with reading.

The real importance is that reading skills give us power and understanding. We can learn all about the world around us, and we can use that knowledge to make our personal world better.

Reading is a practical life skill, like math and science (Grandfather Economic Report).

Knowing how to read (and do math) helps us do everything from reading road signs when we are driving, to baking a special birthday cake for our spouse.

To ask “Why is reading important” is to be naive about the wonderful ways that reading can enrich our lives! Help your child acquire the tools for life success!
